Life in Transition

Transition has been a recurring theme in my life.

I think back to the project “Works,” observing formerly incarcerated individuals reentering society. The fragility of reintegration. The uncertainty of new beginnings. Transition is uncomfortable because it lacks definition. It is neither origin nor arrival. It is in-between. Professionally, creatively, personally—I have spent significant time in that space.

For fifteen years, I have been a caregiver — to a disabled parent, to an elderly grandparent, to a younger sibling on the autism spectrum. Those roles shaped my schedule, my priorities, my identity.  Now circumstances are shifting again.

With transition comes both relief and vertigo. When long-standing responsibilities evolve, the question becomes: who am I outside of them? There is pressure to present coherence. A stable title. A singular focus. But a multi-disciplinary identity resists simplification. Growth requires shedding former identities without fully knowing what replaces them. Where is the starting point for recalibration? Career? Therapy? Relationship? Relocation?

There is no single answer. Transition is not a clean slate; it is layered over history. Life in transition tests patience. Results lag behind effort. Direction feels provisional. Doubt surfaces easily. What I am learning is that movement does not require total clarity. It requires direction.

The individuals I observed in “Works” faced similar ambiguity. Freedom without structure can overwhelm. Progress required incremental steps. Perhaps my own transition demands the same: small, deliberate recalibrations rather than dramatic overhaul. Transition is evidence of movement. Stagnation feels clearer, but it is a quieter decay. Transition is friction, and friction generates heat.

In recent years, I have embraced the in-between more deliberately. Instead of rushing toward fixed identity, I focus on alignment: Does this project reflect my values? Does this training serve longevity? Does this relationship foster growth?

Life rarely pauses cleanly between chapters. It overlaps. It dissolves gradually.

The starting point may simply be acknowledgment: this phase is ending. Another is forming.

And that, in itself, is movement.

Certainty may never be permanent. But direction can be.

Beyond Purism

Purism is seductive. It offers clarity, identity, and a kind of moral or aesthetic high ground. In art, fitness, politics, and even spirituality, there is always a faction that insists on the “correct” way—the pure way—to practice, think, or create. I understand the appeal. Purism simplifies complexity. It provides rules. It creates belonging. But over time, I have grown skeptical of rigid purity in almost every domain of my life.

In creative work, purism often manifests as medium loyalty or stylistic orthodoxy. Film photographers dismiss digital. Painters dismiss conceptual artists. Bodybuilders dismiss functional training. Traditionalists dismiss experimentation. The irony is that many of the artists we now revere were once considered impure. They borrowed, hybridized, and disrupted. They expanded definitions rather than protecting them. Innovation is rarely born from purity; it emerges from friction.

My own practice resists containment. I move between cinematography, painting, lighting design, photography, and physical training. Each informs the other. If I were a purist, I might feel pressured to select one identity and defend it. Instead, I see cross-disciplinary movement as enrichment. The body informs composition. Painting informs lighting. Philosophy informs narrative structure. There is no dilution in that exchange—only integration.

Purism also shows up in physical culture. There are debates about natural versus enhanced bodybuilding, aesthetic versus functional training, strict programming versus intuitive practice. While I respect defined categories—especially in competition—I resist moralizing them. The moment training becomes ideological rather than practical, it loses nuance. A method is a tool, not a creed. What matters is intention, transparency, and self-awareness.

Even spiritually, I find purism limiting. Institutional rigidity often prioritizes doctrinal precision over ethical behavior. The fixation on theological correctness can overshadow compassion, service, and moral courage. If belief does not translate into action, its purity becomes hollow. I am more interested in lived integrity than in doctrinal alignment.

The deeper issue with purism is that it confuses identity with rigidity. Growth requires permeability. It requires the willingness to absorb influence, reconsider positions, and adjust. That does not mean lacking principles. On the contrary, it means understanding that principles are strengthened through testing, not isolation.

There is also an ego component to purity. To declare oneself a purist is to imply elevation above contamination. But creativity, humanity, and progress are inherently messy. They involve contradiction, adaptation, and synthesis. The refusal to engage with difference is often fear disguised as discipline.

Moving beyond purism does not mean abandoning standards. Craft still matters. Structure still matters. Ethics still matter. But standards are frameworks, not cages. They guide, rather than confine.

In my own life, the most meaningful development has occurred when I allowed categories to blur. When I stopped defending a label and started following curiosity. When I chose integration over isolation.

Purity is clean. But life is layered.

I prefer layers.

Strength and Softness

There is a misconception that strength requires hardness — emotional distance, stoicism, impermeability. In physical culture especially, toughness is often equated with silence and restraint. But strength and softness are not opposites. They are complements.

In training, rigidity leads to injury. A muscle that cannot lengthen tears. A joint that cannot adapt deteriorates. True strength includes flexibility. It includes responsiveness. Emotionally, the same principle applies.

To feel deeply is not weakness. It is sensitivity — the capacity to register nuance. The challenge is not eliminating softness, but stabilizing it within structure. I have spent much of my life cultivating independence. Self-sufficiency can resemble invulnerability. It feels controlled. Predictable. But over time, impermeability becomes isolation.

There is courage in allowing oneself to be affected. To care openly. To express uncertainty without collapsing into it. This tension is particularly present in masculine spaces. Physical strength is visible. Emotional depth is less so. Yet the men I respect most — whether artists, athletes, or thinkers — exhibit both.

Consider classical representations of heroes: powerful in form yet expressive in gesture. Even in sculpture, the greatest works balance tension and vulnerability. The body may be carved in marble, but the face often reveals interior life. Strength without softness becomes brittle. Softness without strength becomes unstable. The integration of both produces resilience.

Resilience is not the absence of fracture; it is the ability to recover. It requires internal elasticity. It requires acknowledging impact without disintegrating. For me, the pursuit of strength — in the gym or in thought — is no longer about dominance. It is about capacity. The capacity to endure stress, to hold complexity, to remain grounded while open. Softness does not negate discipline. It humanizes it. To build a powerful body while suppressing emotional awareness is incomplete development. To cultivate sensitivity without structure is equally incomplete.

Integration is the aim. Strength should expand possibility, not narrow it. And softness, properly anchored, expands connection.
