Beyond the Label

[June 2025 - Ongoing, Lindenhurst, NY]

This series began with a simple curiosity: who are the people behind the beer?

We encounter beer constantly — in social settings, on labels designed to catch our attention, in the ritual of pouring and raising a glass. But I wanted to step behind that surface layer. I was less interested in the finished product and more compelled by the hands, minds, and bodies that bring it into existence.

Brew House is an intimate exploration of labor — physical, intellectual, and creative. Brewing is often romanticized, but in reality it is rigorous work. It is heat and steam. It is lifting, cleaning, measuring, calibrating. It is long hours spent monitoring a process that cannot be rushed. In photographing these spaces, I was drawn to the choreography of movement: the turn of a valve, the weight of soaked grain, the quiet inspection of a gauge. These gestures are as expressive as any portrait.

At its core, brewing is both science and intuition. There is chemistry in every decision — temperature, timing, fermentation — yet there is also instinct shaped by experience. I wanted the images to live in that intersection. The stainless steel tanks and industrial textures provide the setting, but the real subject is concentration, patience, and pride.

What interested me most were the individuals themselves. In pauses between tasks, in the way someone leans into their work, or the subtle expression that crosses a face while waiting for a boil — personality reveals itself. These are not anonymous laborers within a system; they are craftspeople. Each carries a distinct presence into the brew house, and I approached them the way I would approach any portrait subject — with respect for their individuality and awareness of their environment as an extension of who they are.

There is very little spectacle here. No staged celebrations. No polished marketing veneer. Instead, I wanted to honor the process — the quiet, repetitive, demanding work that most consumers never see. If there is beauty in this series, it is in the humility of craft and in the dedication required to sustain it.

Beer, in this context, becomes secondary. What remains is something more enduring: the human drive to make something carefully, deliberately, and well.

Through intimate portraits and dynamic imagery, BREW HOUSE highlights the unique personalities and stories of the brewers who dedicate their lives to crafting remarkable products. By showcasing the passion, innovation, and community spirit that define this industry, the series provides a deeper understanding of the integral role that brewing plays in our social rituals and gatherings.

As we journey through the brewing process, "BREW HOUSE" invites viewers to celebrate the artistry of creation and the connections fostered around shared experiences. This project underscores the idea that brewing is not merely about producing beer; it is about bringing people together, nurturing traditions, and appreciating the craftsmanship behind every pour.
